1.0 Introduction
Welcome to CO/SESSION remote communications! This
document describes how to operate the CO/SESSION
demonstration functions.
CO/SESSION is a flexible and powerful remote
communications and control package. Remote access,
control, support, diagnosis, training, and
demonstrations from your computer, to another computer
located elsewhere are possible now with CO/SESSION.
CO/SESSION links two IBM PC/AT/XTs or compatible
computers so they operate as one. What you type at
your computer will be displayed on the remote
computer. You can run any program that you could run
at the remote computer, from your local computer as
easily as if you were sitting at the remote computer.
CO/SESSION operates transparently. In other words, it
operates in the background with most programs. When
you wish to use any of CO/SESSION's extended functions
you only need to press the appropriate FUNCTION keys.
Security mechanisms in CO/SESSION protect your
computer from unauthorized access.
1.1 Typical CO/SESSION Uses
CO/SESSION brings you power and flexibility for:
Customer Support
Link your SUPPORT computer to an APPLICATION computer
and give your customers hands-on support without
leaving your office.
New support options are available now. Software
manufacturers, VARs, and support personnel, boost your
support capability with CO/SESSION.
è
Training
Teach your customers anywhere in the country with
CO/SESSION's dual control capability.
Sales Demonstrations
Demonstrate software from your office with
CO/SESSION's monitoring function. CO/SESSION enhances
the business call with pictures.
Consulting
You can be more productive for your clients by
spending more time applying your consulting expertise
and assistance instead of wasting time commuting.
Joint Problem Solving
Combine your talents with associates and clients
anywhere in the country. CO/SESSION's file transfer
functions and enhanced printing options let you and
your colleagues modify or print the same file
simultaneously.
Remote Access
Access your office computer from your home with
CO/SESSIONS remote control capability. Let CO/SESSION
commute for you.
1.2 Demonstration Version
The CO/SESSION demonstration version is essentially the
same as the regular, full-featured CO/SESSION version.
Refer to the READ-ME file on the CO/SESSION diskette for
the demonstration version restrictions.
1.3 Document Organization
Section 2 presents a more detailed overview of
CO/SESSION. Section 3 is a step by step tutorial. It
describes how to install CO/SESSION and get started
using CO/SESSION. The Appendices include a summary
overview of the CO/SESSION function menu organization.
2.0 CO/SESSION Features And Functions Overview
This Section describes CO/SESSION's monitoring
capability, functions and features.
2.1 Basic CO/SESSION Operation
CO/SESSION links two computers so that PC-DOS/MS-DOS
programs running on one computer are mirrored on the
other. The computer which is running the program is
called the APPLICATION computer. The computer which
is mirroring the APPLICATION computer is called the
SUPPORT computer. See FIGURE 2-1 for an overview of
these definitions.
The SUPPORT computer displays the same screen as the
APPLICATION computer. As a result, you and the
SUPPORT user will see the same thing on your computer
screens. You can run a program from the SUPPORT
computer on the APPLICATION computer as well. The
APPLICATION computer accepts what you type at the
SUPPORT computer as if you were typing at the
APPLICATION computer. Therefore, the CO/SESSION
APPLICATION computer is dually controlled like an
airplane used in flight training.
The SUPPORT computer can be distant from the
APPLICATION computer but the computers must be
connected via Hayes(tm) or compatible modems, or a
hardwired line.
CO/SESSION supports full text and interactive graphics
with the Monochrome Display Adapter (MDA) or Color
Graphics Adapter (CGA), and the Enhanced Graphics
Adapter (EGA) in the CGA or MDA modes.

Overview Of APPLICATION And SUPPORT Computer Definitions
FIGURE 2 - 1
2.2 Extended CO/SESSION Functions And Capabilities
CO/SESSION's extended capabilities make it powerful
and easy to use.
Call ID Directory
You name the APPLICATION and SUPPORT computers that
will be used with CO/SESSION. For each computer,
you assign a Call ID, telephone number, login ID and
password, and baud-rate. These Call ID parameters are
saved in a Call ID directory file. You can modify this
file to suit your needs. You can make connections with
a specific computer or set your computer to wait for a
connection request from any computer in the auto-
answer wait mode. You can break a connection with the
remote computer at any time.
Local/Remote File Functions
CO/SESSION offers a comprehensive set of file
manipulation and transfer functions. You can display
directory contents from the local or remote computer.
You can display, delete, rename/move, copy text files
or copy binary files from either computer.
Keyboard Chat And Voice Conversation
Alternate conversation modes make it easy to
communicate with your remote CO/SESSION user. You can
talk over the telephone connection in the voice mode.
Or you two can type conversations in the keyboard text
chat mode.
è Terminal Emulation Mode / XMODEM File Transfer
You can make your PC emulate a TTY terminal and access
database and bulletin board services. In this mode
you can exchange files using the XMODEM protocol.
Record And Playback
As the CO/SESSION SUPPORT user, you can save and
review individual screen images like a slide-show
presentation. You can also record and playback an
entire SUPPORT monitoring session as if you had a
video tape recorder.
Suspend/Resume
As the SUPPORT user can suspend monitoring without
losing connection with the APPLICATION computer. While
the session is suspended you can run programs, execute
local DOS commands, use the CO/SESSION file functions,
type messages in keyboard chat or use the voice mode.
Billing Log
The SUPPORT user can automatically record to a disk
file incoming and outgoing calls, with whom they were
made, when they were made and how long they lasted.
Remote Printing
You can send print information from the APPLICATION
computer to the SUPPORT computer printer. You have
the option at the APPLICATION computer to ignore
printing, redirect printing to the SUPPORT computer,
or print both at the APPLICATION and SUPPORT
computers. At the SUPPORT computer, you have the
option of ignoring the down-loaded print data,
printing as the data is received, or spooling to a
file.
è APPLICATION Keyboard Lock
You can lock the APPLICATION keyboard to prevent
accidental or unauthorized access to your computer.
Full Speed APPLICATION Execution
You can set the APPLICATION computer to execute at
full-speed and not be delayed by updating the SUPPORT
screen display. At any time, you can switch the
APPLICATION computer back to synchronized mode which
runs at the speed that the SUPPORT screen display can
be updated.
User Customization
You can customize the operating characteristics of
CO/SESSION, including what disk drive and directory
you want files stored in.
3.0 Installing CO/SESSION And Getting Started
This Section describes how to install CO/SESSION and
the operating environments in which CO/SESSION will
run. Included is a tutorial section.
3.1 Installing CO/SESSION
CO/SESSION installation is automated. You are
required only to respond to prompts. The installation
program provides default values for all the prompts.
To accept the defaults press the <Enter> key. For
most CO/SESSION users, with a fixed hard disk drive
"C:", the default values are sufficient.
One CO/SESSION diskette is shipped with the following
files:
SUPPORT.EXE - SUPPORT CO/SESSION executable version
INSTALL.EXE - CO/SESSION installation program
SESSION.HLP - on-line HELP text file
SESSION.RMP - default Call ID directory file
READ-ME - demonstration version release notes
First, take the CO/SESSION demonstration diskette and
place it in your "A:" floppy drive and close the door.
Type in "A:" and press the <Enter> key. Your default
drive designator is now the "A:" floppy drive.
Next, type in "INSTALL" and press the <Enter> key to
execute the CO/SESSION installation program. When the
installation program is loaded, follow the on-screen
instructions to properly install CO/SESSION.
3.2 Loading And Executing CO/SESSION
If CO/SESSION is NOT loaded automatically when you
reboot, you may execute it at any time by typing
"SESSION". The following screen is displayed when
CO/SESSION completes loading:

At any time, you may type the command "SESSION" to bring
up the above screen.
Once CO/SESSION is loaded, access the menus by
pressing <Alt> and <LeftShift> keys simultaneously.
Your current application or DOS is suspended, and the
CO/SESSION MAIN MENU is presented.
If you are using a CGA card and color monitor, you may
notice "snow" on the display screen. If this is the
case, set the CO/SESSION Configuration Setting for
Color Monitor Scan Speed to "SLOW". See the "Define
Configuration Settings" function description.
3.3 Making Your First CO/SESSION Connection
In order for two CO/SESSION systems to connect, one
must be an APPLICATION type, and the other must be a
SUPPORT type. Two CO/SESSION APPLICATION computers
cannot connect. Two CO/SESSION SUPPORT systems can
adjust to establish a connection. In this case, the
computer which is on the receiving end of the call
automatically changes to APPLICATION. At the end of
the connection, the type resets to SUPPORT.
CO/SESSION should be installed and loaded
on two computer systems. At least one must be TYPE
SUPPORT. For this example, the SUPPORT user will make
a connection to the other CO/SESSION computer which is
either TYPE SUPPORT or TYPE APPLICATION.
3.3.1 Setting CO/SESSION To Auto-Answer/Wait Dial-In
The CO/SESSION computer on the receiving end must be
in auto-answer, waiting dial-in mode. The CALL ID
field in the STATUS box should be "WAITING DIAL-IN".
If it is not, press the <F2> FUNCTION key from the
MAIN MENU to get the Communication Functions menu. If
it is, go to subsection 3.3.2.

extension number, as well as access codes and
account numbers, there is room. Any mistakes in
typing may be erased with the <Del> key, or the
backspace key and type over. Use the <Arrow> keys
to move the cursor around the fields. Press
<Enter> when you are finished, and the cursor will
go to the Your Login ID field. Since Password
Protection Checking is off for now, and since the
port parameters at the bottom of the screen are
preset to the port and modem you are using, you may
now save the record. Press the <F10> FUNCTION key.
If you were to define the Login ID and Password
fields, you would first have to coordinate with
your remote user. You would pick a Login ID and
Password and enter them into the fields immediately
below the telephone number field. This is the
Login ID/Password sent by CO/SESSION to the remote
system when you start the DIAL-OUT connection
attempt. Your remote user would enter the same
Login ID and Password into a Call ID record on his
system in the fields immediately above the Port
Parameters. This is the field checked when a Login
ID/Password pair is received on a DIAL-IN
connection attempt. Finally, the remote user would
enable the Password Protection Checking option by
setting it to YES. Refer to the Reference section
4.9.8 for setting the Password Protection Checking
option.

CO/SESSION dial-out using new Call ID
******************************** FIGURE 3-28 ******************************
When the remote system receives your dial-in
attempt, it will accept, and your SUPPORT system
screen will be redrawn to a copy of the remote
APPLICATION screen. You are now connected in a
CO/SESSION session with the remote APPLICATION
machine.
3.5 Modem Setup
CO/SESSION is designed to use the data terminal
ready (DTR) RS-232C and carrier detect (CD) RS-232C
signals in its control of the modem. It uses DTR
to control the answering and disconnecting of the
modem, and it uses CD to detect connections and
disconnections from the other end.
In the descriptions below, reference to the selection
of the Modem Type is made. For more information on
how to define and use the Modem Type, see the
"Add Call ID" function.
For the Hayes 1200 modem, set Switches 3 & 8 down,
all other Switches up; and select Modem Type "Hayes".
For the Hayes 1200B modem, set Switch 3 down; and
select Modem Type "Hayes".
For the Hayes 2400 modem, there are no physical
switches. Instead, software switches are set by
command from CO/SESSION and saved in non-volatile
memory of the modem. When using the Hayes 2400
modem, select Modem Type "Hayes2400".
For the Fastcomm Data Corp. FASTCOMM modem, there
are also no physical switches. Like the Hayes 2400,
software switches are set by command from CO/SESSION
and saved in non-volatile memory of the modem. When
using the FASTCOMM modem, select Modem Type "FASTCOMM".
For setup of other Hayes compatible modems, refer to
Appendix C.
3.6 Operating Environments
CO/SESSION supports all Hayes or Hayes command set
compatible modems. In addition, CO/SESSION will
support direct hardwired connections.
CO/SESSION is intended for IBM-PC, IBM-XT, IBM-AT,
or IBM work-like machines executing PC-DOS/MS-DOS
2.x/3.x.
The CO/SESSION SUPPORT version requires about 120K
bytes of memory, whereas the APPLICATION Only version
requires about 75K bytes of memory. In addition,
CO/SESSION uses the disk drive and directory that was
specified when CO/SESSION was installed, to store
temporary information and to load functions which
share the resident memory.
3.7 Restrictions And Limitations
CO/SESSION is implemented in such a way as to
handle most DOS programs. However, when CO/SESSION
is activated it sets up several of the system
software and hardware interrupt vectors to access
its own routines. If any program uses the same
vectors in an incompatible manner then use of
CO/SESSION will not be available for those programs.
The MS-DOS/PC-DOS operating system is not designed to
allow two programs to share its facilities at the
same time. If you invoke CO/SESSION when DOS is in
use elsewhere, you must wait until DOS is free before
CO/SESSION can use those facilities. A message will
inform you to exit DOS and complete what you were
doing.

Modem Technical Specifications
Modem Setup
CO/SESSION is designed to use the data terminal ready
(DTR) RS-232C and carrier detect (DCD) RS-232C
signals in its control of the modem. It uses DTR to
control the answering and disconnecting of the modem,
and it uses DCD to detect connections and
disconnections from the other end.
(1) For Hayes modems, refer to Section 3.5
(2) For Hayes compatible modems, refer to your modem
user guide documentation, and find the switch
settings that control the setting of DTR and DCD.
In all cases, the switch for DTR should be set
such that the computer controls DTR; and the
switch for DCD should be set such that the DCD
signal reflects the true state of the line
carrier signal.
Cable Setup
CO/SESSION uses pins 2 through 8 and 20 and the cable
for connection to the modem MUST have these pins at
both ends.
For direct hardwired connection between two
computers, select modem type "DirectCable" in the
port parameters, and cross pins 2 and 3, and 6 and
20.
